If you are a fan of Amazon's voice assistant, good news, you can now use Alexa with just your voice on any PC running Windows 10. The latest version of the Alexa app on the Windows Store now can listen for the Alexa wake word 'when the app is running in the background or minimized.' Before this, Alexa was limited to push-to-talk.
That gives Windows 10 users a choice between sending all their voice data to Microsoft, via Cortana, or to Amazon, via Alexa. When the Alexa app for Windows 10 arrived last November, only a select few Alexa Built-in PCs had the ability to wake the voice assistant purely by voice. Everyone else installing the app from the Windows Store was limited to needing to press a button to invoke Alexa to answer their queries.

You can turn off Alexa wake word detection in the Alexa app. In addition, if you remove an earbud from your ear, access to Alexa will be disabled for that earbud. For this how-to, you'll need an Alexa-powered device from Amazon, (natch!), and the Alexa app from the iOS App Store. (Android instructions should be similar.)

- Tap the Alexa icon to begin.
- On the Home screen, tap the 'hamburger menu' icon in the upper left-hand corner of the app's screen.
- Tap 'Settings' from the menu that appears.

- On the next screen, scroll down until You find the 'Wake Word' menu option. Tap it.
- Tap the pull-down menu to display the available wake words for your device. At the time of this article, the available choices are Alexa, Amazon, Echo, and Computer.
- Tap the 'SAVE' button to save your selection.
- The app will tell you when your changes have been saved.
