This article lists down common fixes users can apply to boot up Mac SSD that refuses to start-up. Such a situation usually requires repairing of Mac start-up disk with Disk Utility application.
An important application in your maintenance toolbox is the Disk Utility, which is located in the Utilities folder within your Applications folder. When you first run this program, it looks something like Figure 1, displaying all the physical disks and volumes on your system.
- Launch Disk Utility, located at Applications Utilities. Or, type 'Disk Utility' into Spotlight Search to bring up the application quickly. Disk Utility displays a two-pane interface. Select the drive that contains the volume you want to enlarge.
- Launch the Disk Utility app on your Mac and highlight the hard drive icon under ‘ External' (for external hard drives). If you choose any other drive, the partition option will become unclickable. Now click Partition on the top toolbar. A window that has partition information will pop up.

- If you have multiple operating systems on multiple disks, you can boot from another Mac OS X installation on another drive to check your current start-up disk. Or, you can boot your system from the original Mac OS X installation CD and run Disk Utility from the Installation menu.

You can also elect to verify and repair permissions (also called privileges) on a disk; these are the read/write. If you can't save or move a file that you should be able to access, check that drive for permissions problems. To verify or repair a drive, first select the target volume/partition in the list at the left. To check the contents of the drive and display any errors, click the Verify Disk button.
